10 things You Should Know About the BHIM App

1. Cashless Payments Using Biometric Details:

The BHIM app helps users receive digital payments from customers, through Aadhaar authentication method. It is a real-time payment which uses a biometric system to receive payments. The merchants must download the app and have a fingerprint scanner to enable direct payments from Aadhaar linked bank accounts.

The customer only needs to provide the fingerprint scan. Once the verification is done, the amount is directly debited to the bank account of the merchant.  This reduces the hassles of cash payments as well as card payments.

2. Internet or Smartphone Not Required:

This app can be used to make payments in places like remote areas or places with poor internet connectivity. The user must dial *99# from their mobile and follow the instructions offered by the executive or IVRS.

3. Referral and Cashback Schemes Introduced:

The government has set aside a budget to offer rewards and cashbacks to BHIM app users. This is a government strategy which aims at increasing BHIM app usage and enables digital payments for both merchants and customers. Customers can earn rewards points for successful referrals. A cashback scheme has been introduced for merchants, where they can earn up to Rs 300 a month for payments received through BHIM app.

4. Transfer Money to Mobile Numbers:

Through BHIM app, a user can transfer money to contacts or any mobile number, instantly. The mobile number to which the user is making transactions must be registered with BHIM or should have a bank account linked to UPI. With each update, some features are added to the app to allow better facilities to the user. The latest update on BHIM app allows users to edit the virtual payment address which is necessary for UPI payments which were non-editable.

5. No Cost for Merchants:

In the past, merchants had to apply for POS machines to receive payments, digitally. Availing POS machine was a lengthy process and the merchants had to pay several charges. Now, with the advent of BHIM app, merchants do not need to go through a lengthy process and can simply download BHIM on smartphones to receive payments digitally.

The services of BHIM app are absolutely free of cost. The merchant only has to buy a fingerprint scanner, whose price starts at Rs 2,000. Still, the merchant is able to save money as the fingerprint scanner is cheaper than POS machine.

6. Comprehensive Transaction Tool:

BHIM app works as a comprehensive payment tool for users. The user or the merchants do not need multiple bank apps, as BHIM app serves as a single window for multiple bank and payment options. However, the app allows only a single bank payment.

7. Transaction Limitations:

The app has some limitations when it comes to transactions. A user is allowed to pay a maximum of Rs 10,000 during a single transaction. The maximum limit per day is set at Rs 20,000. The prescribed upper limit is 20 transactions a month per bank account. The user can block unknown payment requests.

8. QR Code:

To enable easier and faster transactions, the BHIM app offers the facility of QR code scan. Previously, this facility was not available and it is a recent addition to the app.

9. Multilingual App:

As this is a government app, it’s available in 12 vernacular languages. This maximizes the reach of the app. This also encourages users to use the app, even if they are not well-acquainted with the English language. In this way, the government aims to empower users digitally.

10. Better Than Mobile Wallets:

E-wallets can be used to make payments, only to users with same e-wallets. But, BHIM app can be used to transfer money directly to the bank account, linked to Aadhaar. The user can also transfer money to non-UPI banks, using IFSC or MMID mode through the BHIM app. Unlike mobile wallets the user does not need to keep money in BHIM app to make payments.
