National Health Insurance Scheme in India

Discussed below are some health insurance initiatives taken up by the central government:

1. Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY):

Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana is a social security scheme launched by the Central Government to offer better healthcare facilities to BPL families and poor landless households in India. The main objective of the scheme is to provide health insurance coverage to the BPL families at low prices.

By enrolling in the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, the subscriber avails healthcare facilities through monetary aid offered by the government. A major part of the medical expenses are covered by the government, which is about 75% and the remaining cost would be covered by the state government. The subscriber must pay a nominal fee of Rs 30 at the time of enrolment.

The beneficiary is eligible for medical facilities from both private and public sector hospitals with maximum insurance coverage of Rs 30,000. The RSBY scheme is a family health insurance plan that covers a maximum of 5 members in each family.

2. Employment State Insurance Scheme:

Employment State Insurance Scheme or ESIC is a customized health insurance scheme, introduced by the Government of India, to offer social security and economic benefits to the insured and dependent family members. The scheme not only provides medical cover to the beneficiary and his dependents, but also offers cash benefits on temporary or permanent disability and so on.

The scheme is also valid for factory employees where the number of workers is more than 10 and has been extended to hotel and shop employees, drivers and workers provided the organisation they work in has the requisite minimum number of employees.

3. Central Government Health Scheme:

Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is a Scheme aimed at providing comprehensive healthcare services to Central Government Employees and Pensioners. The scheme covers pensioners and dependents that are living in specific cities covered under the scheme.

The scheme includes various healthcare services along with a range of wellness centres like Allopathy, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy and CGHS dispensaries. The scheme enables the government employees and retirees, avail healthcare facilities and reduce their out-of-pocket expenses.

4. Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana:

Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana is a social security initiative, introduced with the objective of offering financial aid and social security to rural and BPL households in India. The scheme offers access to healthcare facilities for the breadwinner of the family, belonging to the age group of 10 to 59 years. The beneficiary is eligible to receive a compensation of Rs 30,000 in case of natural death, Rs, 75,000 for accidental death and a compensation of Rs 37,500 in case of partial disability.

5. Universal Health Insurance Scheme:

The Universal Health Insurance Scheme is a family health insurance plan launched by 4 public sector general insurance companies in India. The subscriber receives reimbursement of up to Rs 30,000 for hospitalization of self or dependents, accidental death cover (Rs 25,000) and per day compensation of Rs 50 due to loss in earnings during hospitalization for up to 15 days. The scheme aims to provide social security to the BPL and poor rural families in India.

6. Janashree Bima Yojana:

The Janashree Bima Yojana was launched by the Central Government in August 2000 and aims to provide life insurance cover to BPL families in rural and urban areas. This scheme is a joint initiative of the Indian government and the life insurance corporation (LIC) and encompasses a total of 45 occupational groups.  Any individual belonging to the age group of 18-59 years is eligible to enroll in this scheme, provided the policyholder is a member of the vocational group/ occupation as specified by the scheme.
