E - Aadhaar is the soft copy of Aadhaar which can be accessed from anywhere at any point of time. E – Aadhaar can be downloaded from the official website of UIDAI by logging on to https://resident.uidai.gov.in. Government has mandated all service providers requiring Aadhaar to verify the identity of individuals to treat E – Aadhaar on par with the original Aadhaar card.

Having E-Aadhaar is just as good as having the original Aadhaar card. In case you need E-Aadhaar, then you will have to follow the below mentioned steps;
Following are few benefits of having E - Aadhaar:
There is no complete online procedure to apply and obtain Aadhaar card. All applicants must compulsorily be physically present at the Aadhaar card enrolment center at the time of document verification. Below mentioned are the steps to follow to apply for Aadhaar card.
The Aadhaar registration can be tracked online and you don’t have to visit the office. You must follow the below mentioned steps to track your Aadhaar registration status:
Step 1: Log on to Aadhaar card official website of UIDAI.
Step 2: Click on ‘My Aadhaar’ and click on ‘check Aadhaar status’.
Step 3: Enter enrolment ID, date / time and security code.
Step 4: Enter the correct security code / captcha and click on submit.
Step 5: Your Aadhaar registration status would be displayed.
You must follow the below mentioned steps to download E – Aadhaar:
Step 1: Log on to https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
Step 2: Click on ‘Download Aadhaar’
Step 3: Enter enrolment ID, full name, pin code and security code and click on ‘request OTP’.
Step 4: You will receive One Time Password OTP, enter it to validate and proceed.
Step 5: You will be asked to take up a small survey, complete it and click on ‘Download Aadhaar’
Step 6: Close the tab after downloading.
As mentioned earlier, having E – Aadhaar is equivalent to having the original Aadhaar card. E – Aadhaar offers the same kind of benefits that you enjoy when having the original Aadhaar card.
Details mentioned on the Aadhaar card can be modified / updated by visiting the nearest Aadhaar enrollment center or even online. Supporting documents must be furnished without which details won’t be updated.
In case of offline update, you must follow the below mentioned steps:
Step 1: Walk in to the nearest enrolment center. Few centers may require prior appointment.
Step 2: Produce the self attested photocopies of the document with original that supports change in particular(s).
Step 3: Provide your biometrics and photograph.
Step 4: You will be given an update request number (URN). URN can be used to track your application for Aadhaar card update request.
In case of offline update, you must follow the below mentioned steps:
Step 1: Individuals must log on to the official website of UIDAI to update or modify details on the Aadhaar Card.
Step 2: One Time Password OTP, would be sent on your registered mobile number, enter to validate and login.
Step 3: Now select the particular(s) to be updated or modified.
Step 4: Upload the requisite documents that support the updated details in prescribed format and submit.
Step 5: Choose the BPO from which you would like to receive the service.
Step 6: Update Request Number URN, will be generated up on successful submission of the request. URN can be used to track the Aadhaar card update status.
Step 7: You can either print the receipt or download a copy containing URN. Once Aadhaar card is updated, you can download the updated version and get your Aadhar card print out, E - Aadhaar.
Q: I want to give up my Aadhaar. How and what needs to be done?
A: There is no option for returning Aadhaar as of now. You can stop producing your Aadhaar as a document for Identification Proof if you do not wish to use it.
Q: My date of birth in PAN and Aadhaar do not match. Not able to link them. What do I do?
A: If there are any mismatches, IT department would send SMS on the registered mobile number with an OTP to facilitate linking.
Q: Service Provider not accepting e-Aadhaar copy. What to do?
A: If any authority does not accept downloaded E-Aadhaar, then please register a complaint with higher authorities of the concerned department.
Q: Is it mandatory to enroll for Aadhaar to file tax returns or apply for PAN in India? If yes, then what is the process for NRIs?
A: There is no need to pay tax in India if your income is not generated from India. It is not necessary for NRIs to have Aadhaar in order to file ITR, but having PAN is a must for ITR filing.
