The Ayushman Bharat Yojana is a government-funded health insurance scheme, launched by the honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in September 2018. The scheme aims to provide Rs 5 Lakh insurance cover per family per year for secondary and tertiary health care for poor families in India. The scheme was launched simultaneously in 445 districts across 30 states in India.

The beneficiaries covered under this scheme can avail cashless health care treatment from any public/ private hospital, empanelled under the scheme. The scheme provides coverage to all members of the family and helps the beneficiary access quality health care facilities by enrolling in Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

Ayushman Bharat Eligibility:

The Ayushman Bharat Scheme is designed keeping in mind, the medical needs of the economically backward people in India. The PMJAY scheme includes only those who belong to the deprived rural families and identified occupational category of urban workers. Economically backward people from both rural and urban families are included in this program. The eligibility criteria for the Ayushman Bharat Scheme are provided in the list given below as per rural and urban eligibility:

For Rural Areas:

  • BPL Families living in a kutcha house with only one room
  • Families with no adult member aged between 16 to 59 years
  • A family headed by a female with no adult male member in the age group of 16-59 years
  • Families with disabled members and no able-bodied adult member
  • SC/ST households
  • Landless households deriving a major part of their income from manual casual labor.
  • Destitutes and those surviving on alms
  • Tribal groups
  • Manual scavenger families
  • Legally-released bonded labourers

For Urban Areas:

In urban areas the following 11 occupational groups can enjoy the benefits of this scheme:

  • Ragpicker
  • Beggar
  • Domestic worker
  • Street vendor/ cobbler/ hawker/ other service providers working on the streets
  • Sweeper/ sanitation worker/ gardener
  • Construction worker/ plumber/ mason/ laborer/ painter/ welder/ security guard/ coolie and other workers
  • Home-based workers/ artisans/ handicraft workers/ tailors
  • Chowkidars
  • Electrician/ mechanics/ assemblers/ repair workers
  • Transport workers/ drivers/ conductors/ helpers to drivers and conductors/ cart-pullers/ rickshaw pullers
  • Shop worker/ assistant/ peon in small establishments/ helpers/ delivery assistants/ attendants/ waiters

Health Insurance Schemes:

The initiatives taken up by the government under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme are as follows:

  • Health and wellness centre: The National Health Care Policy has envisioned health and wellness centres as the foundation of India’s health care system. Under this 1.5 Lakh centres will bring health care closer to homes of people in India. These centres will provide comprehensive health care, including treatment for non-communicable diseases as well as maternal and child health care services. The centre will also provide free essential drugs and diagnostic services.
  • National health protection scheme: The second flagship program under Ayushman Bharat, is the National Health Protection Scheme, which will cover 10 Crore poor and vulnerable families (approximately 50 Crore beneficiaries) providing coverage up to Rs 5 Lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. This is the largest government-funded health insurance scheme in the World. Adequate funds will be provided for the smooth implementation of this program.

Ayushman Bharat: How to Apply?

The major objective of Ayushman Bharat Scheme is to strengthen primary health care by solving gripping health care issues. The scheme aims at making medical treatment affordable, by introducing an excellent health insurance scheme. This health insurance scheme mainly covers BPL families and workers in the unorganized sector.

If an individual fulfils the eligibility criteria set by the government or is engaged in any of the above mentioned professions, then he is automatically eligible to receive the benefits of the scheme.

There is no need to make a registration or fill an online application form, to avail treatment under PMJAY mega health insurance scheme. All eligible beneficiaries can avail treatment just by showing their Aadhaar card or Ayushman Bharat family cards or Ration card or Voter ID card. However, for treatment under PMJAY a second-time, Aadhaar card is mandatory.
