What is Ayushman Bharat health insurance?

The Ayushman Bharat is a central government scheme that aims to provide health insurance for nearly 10 crore beneficiaries. The scheme was launched to implement the vision of Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi and its main objective are to provide social security to poor and vulnerable citizens of India and help them avail healthcare services at public and private empanelled hospitals.

The scheme offers coverage of Rs. 5 lakh to vulnerable families for helping them avail primary, secondary and tertiary care, and medical services. The sum assured is valid for all the insured family members of the beneficiary. The scheme is implemented and managed through national insurance companies. The beneficiary has no liability of premium payment as the premiums are paid partly by the central government and partly by the state government.

  • There are very few ailments that are excluded from the scheme. The beneficiary is eligible to get insurance cover for pre-existing diseases illnesses.
  • The scheme also provides coverage for expenses for daycare treatments thus further reducing the out-of-pocket expenditure of the beneficiary.

How to apply for the scheme?

The scheme is based on entitlements and does not require any kind of registration. Therefore eligible persons do not need to apply for this scheme. Families identified under the SECC database automatically become eligible for the scheme. Eligible persons can also visit the Ayushman Bharat website and click on ‘check eligibility’ link to find out whether or not their names features in the list of beneficiaries. This will confirm the candidature and will help the person to enroll under the scheme.

The scheme aims to transform the way healthcare schemes were provided to vulnerable and BPL households. With this scheme, people will be able to avail better medical services at empanelled hospitals without spending money from their own pockets. This way a large number of people can avail appropriate and timely treatment and avail proper medical attention from professionals. The scheme will help the country nurture a healthy population.

The scheme has a set of pre-specified eligibility criteria that will help the beneficiaries identify their candidature. The eligibility criteria are based on data collected under the SECC in the year 2011. Although the scheme is meant for poor and vulnerable families, there are certain distinctions specified for people belonging to the rural and urban areas. The documents required for enrolling under the Ayushman Bharat scheme are:

  • Scanned copy of the Aadhaar
  • Special category certificate
