Documents Required For Passport Renewal

What is Passport? Passport is an official document issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, MEA, stating the Identity and Nationality of the passport holders. A Passport contains photograph, nationality, date of birth, address and signature of the holder. Although Passport is used to travel abroad, it can also be used as a document for identity proof, address proof and age proof. Ministry of External Affairs thoroughly verifies all the details furnished by you, at the time of application.

If there are any discrepancies, then your application would be rejected or put on hold, until you furnish the legitimate information through respective documents. Passports issued in India have a validity of 10 years from the date of issue.

What is passport renewal? Passports will have a validity of 10 years from the date of issue and need periodic renewal. Your Passport will not be valid after the expiry date and you cannot travel abroad. You can renew your passport 1 year before its expiry date. Renewal of passport is required when the passport has expired or when it is due to expire.

Short Validity Passports (SVP) issued, maybe renewed as per the decision of the Regional Passport Office or the Assistant Regional Passport Officer.  SVPs are generally issued to the students who require Passports to appear for an International exam/test and will be valid for 5 years. SVPs are also issued to the applicants having allegations of criminal charges and have a case running in a court. SVPs are issued to these applicants on the condition that they get an approval in writing from the court. The validity of a minor’s passport is 5 years and can be renewed when the applicant reaches the age of 15 years.
