Why FSSAI Registration is Required?

Any Company which wishes to carry on the food business, must register itself and obtain the FSSAI registration or licence. FSSAI License is a must for any food business operator like food manufacturing, processing, storage and distribution and selling food products. The FSSAI license is important as it ensures that food distributed or processed by a registered entity is chemically tested and safe for consumption. Food license prevents businesses from using cheap quality ingredients. Obtaining a food license also increases the reliability of a business and helps gain more customers.

Documents Required for FSSAI Registration:

The documents which must be submitted to obtain the FSSAI registration vary depending on the license. Given below are some of the common documents that must be submitted for registration:

  • Photo ID of the business promoter
  • Rental agreement/ utility bill
  • Partnership deed/ certificate of incorporation/ articles of Association/ memorandum of association
  • List of products manufactured/ stored/ processed
  • Food safety management system
  • Duly filled and signed Form B
  • The Government authorized ID proof
  • Proof of possession of premises
  • NOC and copy of a license from the manufacturer
  • Declaration form
  • Supporting proof of business turnover
  • NOC from the municipality and local bodies

The above list only represents normal documents that are required for FSSAI registration. The applicant has to provide additional documents based on the license for which the application is made.

Types of FSSAI License:

Business entities can obtain the food license by applying through the FSSAI Food Licensing and Registration System. The food license can be obtained under various categories listed below:

  • State License:  Small and medium business entities like food manufacturers, transporters, marketers, retailers and food processing units must obtain food license from the State Government.
  • Central License: Large scale food units and business operators like export-oriented units, large manufacturers, importers, and food agencies who supply food in railways, airports or seaports, must obtain their food license from the central government.
  • FSSAI Registration: Small food manufacturers and people in the food business can obtain their license from the state government by submitting the required documents.

Who Can Apply for FSSAI Registration?

Entities involved in the manufacture of food, processing, storage and distribution of food products must obtain FSSAI license. The registration depends on the volume and nature of the business. A 14-digit number is provided to the entities registered with FSSAI along with a logo. The registration procedure aims to create more accountability, in order to maintain the quality of the food.

Procedure for Obtaining FSSAI Registration:

  • An applicant must submit Form A to initiate the process to the food and safety department.
  • The application may be approved or disapproved by the food and safety department within 7 days from the date of application. The reason will be stated to the applicant in writing.
  • In case the application is accepted, the department will grant a registration certificate along with registration number and photo of the applicant.
  • The FSSAI registration must be displayed at the place of business.
