What is Health Insurance?

Health insurance is a contract between the insurer and the insured which guarantees insurance coverage and takes care of medical expenses of the policyholder in case of hospitalization. Health insurance plans offer cover for dengue and other vector-borne diseases for hospitalization.

Some insurance companies also introduced special insurance cover to take care of vector-borne diseases like dengue. The average cost incurred on Dengue treatment varies from Rs 35,000 to 70,000 in India. The plan covers both hospitalization and outpatient expenses.

Why is It Necessary to Avail Insurance Cover for Vector Borne Diseases?

If you live in a city prone to vector-borne diseases, avail a dengue care plan to insure your family against vector-borne diseases. These plans are available as both individual plans and family floater plans.

The vector-specific plan offers coverage for diseases like dengue, malaria, kala-Azar, chikungunya, Zika virus, Japanese Encephalitis, and lymphatic Filariasis. The dengue care plan offers coverage only for vector-borne diseases, while the normal health insurance plan offers comprehensive coverage for all diseases which result in hospitalization.

A vector-specific health insurance plan covers inpatient and outpatient treatment, home care and diagnosis.

Health Insurance Covers for Dengue and Related Diseases:

  • The premium does not depend on the age of the policyholder and remains constant.
  • No pre-health check-up is required to buy a dengue insurance policy. Just a self-declaration is sufficient to avail the health cover.
  • Many insurance companies pay full sum assured to the policyholder on being diagnosed with vector-borne diseases, be it just a fever or a serious medical condition.
  • A few insurers also cover outpatient treatment and home care facilities separately, by charging an additional premium.
  • Insurers generally cover the medical cost, 30 days before or after hospitalization (pre and post hospitalization costs). Some of the insurance companies offer health insurance for dengue and also cover outpatient treatment, outpatient doctor consultation, diagnostic tests and home nursing.
  • The policyholder doesn’t receive any maturity benefit under this policy.

Features and Benefits:

A dengue specific plan has the following features:

  • High Coverage Limit: These plans offer high sum assured which ranges up to Rs 75,000 a year. The premium amount is nominal and can be availed by the insured/ family members covered in the policy.
  • Coverage for Hospitalization: In case the policyholder gets hospitalized for conditions relating to vector-borne diseases, then the policy offers a lump sum benefit. The insurance plan also covers costs related to post-hospitalization care, medical bills and doctor fees.
  • Cashless Payments: Payments can be done easily through the cashless facility. The policyholder would reimburse you, in case of treatment outside network hospitals.

What is Covered?

The dengue-specific health plans cover self and spouse along with 3 dependent children and can be extended to 2 dependent parents. No pre-examination or medical test is required to purchase these plans. The other coverage’s offered by these health insurance plans are as follows:

  • Hospitalization expenses
  • Diagnostic tests
  • Doctor’s fee
  • Medication
  • Treatment charges
  • Hospital room rent

What is Not Covered?

People already suffering from vector-borne diseases like chronic malaria are not eligible to buy these plans. You can buy them as a preventative measure if you are residing in a place or a city prone to vector-borne diseases. The dengue specific plans cover only vector-borne diseases and offer no coverage for other ailments or medical conditions. The other exclusions are as follows:

  • Hospitalization cost for less than 24 hours.
  • Diagnosis and treatment outside India are not covered.
  • Hospitalization due to vector-borne disease within the lock-in period.
  • Non-allopathic treatment
  • Experimental drugs or unproven medical procedures.
