Birth Disabilities: Birth disabilities, also known as congenital anomalies, are functional or structural anomalies and can be recognized prenatally at birth. Environmental teratogens, micronutrient deficiencies, chromosomal disorders and single gene defects can cause congenital anomalies.

Disability Due to Accidents: These are disabilities in an accident. If your limbs and hands are broken in an accident, this is accidental disability. Full or partial blindness caused in a road accident, falls in this category.

Mental Disabilities: Mental disabilities impact your behaviour, mood and thinking. Depression, schizophrenia, dementia and autism are the common mental disorders in India. A majority of mental disorders can be cured over time.

Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme

In collaboration with ICICI Lombard, a private insurance company, the National Trust offers Niramaya health insurance policy for differently-abled people. The premium remains same, despite the age of the applicant. The Niramaya health insurance policy offers a health cover of up to Rs 1 Lakh and requires no medical tests. The people with a valid disability certificate are eligible to apply for Niramaya Health Insurance Scheme. The premium amounts are paid by the National Trust.

Swavlamban Health Insurance Policy

Swavlamban Health Insurance Policy is a group mediclaim policy for differently-abled people. It was introduced by the Trust Fund for Empowerment of Persons with disabilities and the New India Assurance Company Limited. The plan offers affordable health insurance to people with mental disorders, blindness, hearing impairments, mental retardation, low vision, locomotor disability and leprosy.  

Policyholders get a sum assured of Rs 2 Lakh (on family floater health insurance plan), for a time-frame of 1 year. The age band for this useful health insurance policy is 0-65 years. The policyholders have to pay a premium of Rs 357 and enjoy yearly health cover of Rs 2 Lakhs.

Factors Impacting the Eligibility of Differently-Disabled People for Health Insurance:

Differently-abled people must furnish details related to health conditions. Insurance companies sometimes deny health insurance policy if you are suffering from chronic illnesses. Another important aspect is family earnings. Insurers offer an appropriate insurance plan according to earning potential of the family of a disabled person. The premium paying capacity is also taken into consideration.

Tax Benefits for Differently-Disabled People

Under section 80U and 80DD of the Income Tax Act, 1961, tax benefits are offered to people with disabilities. Under Section 80U, people with more than 40% and less than 80% disability, enjoy tax deduction of up to Rs 75,000 a year. People with over 80% disability enjoy tax deduction of up to Rs 1,25,000 a year. Section 80DD offers tax deductions to family members and kin of the taxpayer with disabilities, whereas Section 80U offers deductions to the individual taxpayer with a disability.
