Getting Health Insurance with Pre-Existing Conditions is Challenging

Yes, getting health insurance with pre-existing conditions is challenging as insurance companies are reluctant to offer cover to such people. This is because individuals with pre-existing conditions pose a grave financial risk to insurers. It has been mandated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA), that insurers must offer health cover to individuals with pre-existing conditions.

The Concept of Waiting Period

A waiting period is the time a policyholder must wait before making a claim from the health insurance plan. The waiting period clause has been introduced to avoid unethical practices in the health insurance segment. All health insurance plans have a waiting period of a month, during which only accidents are covered. Insurers have a 2-4 year waiting period for pre-existing diseases.

Types of Waiting Periods:

  • Initial Waiting Period: An initial waiting period is the first 30 days of a health insurance plan. During this period, policyholders cannot make a claim, except for accidents.
  • Pre-Existing Disease Waiting Period: Usually, the pre-existing disease waiting period ranges from 2-4 years. The waiting period depends on your current health status and the insurer you choose.
  • Disease-Specific Waiting Period: As the name suggests, a disease-specific waiting period is a waiting period defined exclusively for certain ailments like ENT disorder, osteoporosis, hernia, tumors and so on.
  • Maternity Benefits Waiting Period: Some insurers offer maternity benefits with a waiting period. The waiting period for maternity benefits may range from 9 months to 3 years.

How to Get Health Insurance with Pre-Existing Conditions

  • While some insurers look at your entire medical history, others look at the medical reports over the last 3-4 years. If you are suffering from any disease, its best to approach multiple insurers and benefit from the cut-throat competition in the market.
  • Feel free to disclose the type and seriousness of the disease. After the completion of the waiting period, the medical expenses would be covered. At the same time, hospitalization costs from other ailments are also covered. Read the terms and conditions of the health insurance policy carefully while availing it.
  • Do not shift to another insurance company, unless you complete the existing waiting period. Let’s say your current waiting period is 4 years and you have already waited for a period of 2 years. If you shift to another insurer, you are expected to wait for a period of 2-4 years again.
  • Some insurers allow you to reduce the waiting period by paying a higher premium.
  • You may be asked to undergo medical tests. The pre-existing conditions are taken into account on the basis of the results of medical checkups.
