You require a PAN (Permanent Account Number) Card, even for the simplest of financial transactions. You want to open a savings bank account or an FD? The bank asks for your PAN. You apply for a credit card? You need a PAN Card.

You want to invest in ELSS or a mutual fund? You need a PAN. Saving for your retirement in a PPF or NPS? The bank asks for your PAN.

So what is a PAN? Permanent Account Number popularly called PAN, is a 10-digit alphanumeric number, which is allotted to you/Company/HUF, by the Income Tax Department, after you apply for it.

In the past, if you applied for a PAN, you had to fill up forms physically, as specified by the Income Tax Department. This was the Form 49A for resident individuals like yourself.

You then had to provide supporting documents like an Identity and Address Proof, and Date of Birth.

What is pan card?

The PAN card is an important identification document. It is issued by the income tax department to residents of India. Once the PAN card is issued; it remains valid for the entire life of the PAN card holder. The primary objective of PAN is to use a universal identification key to track financial transactions that might have a taxable component to prevent tax evasion.

How To Apply For a PAN Card?

PAN can be applied through both the online and offline method. The online method is a convenient way of obtaining the PAN. The process is hassle free and requires the applicant to submit the online form along with online payment of the respective processing fees. Copies of the documents required can be sent through post or can be submitted through either NSDL or UTITSL website for verification.

The PAN can also be applied through the offline method by downloading the application form from the official website. The duly filled form must be attached with the requisite documents and submitted to the NSDL office along with the processing fees.

How To Apply For A PAN Online?

Today, you can apply for PAN Online. After you have completed all the steps, you must send the acknowledgement receipt to the NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) or UTI Infrastructure Technology.

Steps To Apply For PAN Card Online:

 

1. You must submit the PAN Card application Form 49A on the NSDL Website. Form 49A is the application for allotment of the PAN.

2. You then fill in the details in the Form 49A. Go through the detailed instructions before filling details in the Form 49A.

3. While filling the Form 49A, you must fill your surname before your first name. But, on the PAN Card, your 'First Name' appears, followed by your 'Surname'.

4. When applying for PAN, you will have to pay Rs 110  (An application fee of Rs 93 + 18% GST). You can make the payment via debit/credit card, DD, or even net-banking.

5. On a successful payment, you get an acknowledgement. You must save this acknowledgement number.

6. After you have applied and made the payment, you will have to send supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL.

7. After receiving the documents, NDSL will process your PAN application.

Take a look at the list of documents you must courier to the NSDL, as an identity/address proof. You can submit any one identity proof, one address proof and one DOB.

  • Proof of identity - Voters Card, Aadhaar Card, ration card, drivers license or Passport.
  • Proof of address - Electricity Bill or Landline Telephone Bill, Water Bill, Gas connection Card, Bank account statement or Credit card statement.

Documents required to apply for a PAN card:

There are certain documents that must be attached along with the PAN application form to procure the PAN card. There are three types of documents that must be submitted. They are identity proof documents, address proof documents and proof of date of birth.

Identity proof documents:

  • Voter ID card
  • Ration card
  • Passport
  • Driving license
  • Arms license
  • Aadhaar card
  • Pensioner’s card
  • Photo ID issued by the central government or state government or public sector undertakings.
  • Central government health scheme card
  • Bank certificate on the letterhead along with the name and stamp of the issuing officer
  • Ex-serviceman’s health scheme photo card.
  • Identity certificate issued by MP or MLA or Gazetted officer.

Address proof document:

  • Copy of electricity bill
  • Landline or broadband connection bill
  • Water bill
  • Gas connection card
  • Bank account statement
  • Credit card statement
  • Passport
  • Voter ID
  • Aadhaar card
  • Passport of the spouse
  • Driving license
  • Copy of the post office passbook
  • Property tax assessment order
  • Domicile certificate
  • Original Employer’s certificate
  • Property registration document
  • Allotment letter issued by the government
  • Depository account statement

Proof of date of birth:

  • Passport
  • Driving license
  • Marriage certificate issued by the registrar
  • Matriculation certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Pension payment order
  • Domicile certificate issued by the government
  • Affidavit issued by magistrate stating date of birth

The person applying for PAN needs to attach any one of the documents of proof of birth, age proof and address proof from the above mentioned categories. The bills and the bank statements mentioned above should not be dated more than the previous 3 months.

Cost to apply for a PAN card:

For the residents of India, the charges for applying for a new PAN card are Rs 116. The individual also needs to pay the online charges which are around Rs 5. The fee includes a processing fee of Rs 93 along with 18% GST. The fees can vary depending on the mode of payment chosen by the applicant.

The fee is Rs 1,020 for foreign citizens along with an online fee of Rs 5. The fee includes a processing fee of Rs 93 along with dispatch charges of Rs 771 with 18% GST. The PAN is mandatory for organizations that are keen to carry on business with India.

Steps to apply for a PAN online:

The steps to apply for PAN online are given below:

  • Visit the online PAN card official website. You can apply through both NSDL and UTITSL website as both are authorised issuer of PAN.
  • On the website form appears the title ‘online PAN application’. Under the ‘application type’ select ‘New PAN- Indian Citizen (form 49A)’. If you are a foreign national select ‘New PAN- Foreign Citizen (form 49AA)’
  • Select the category of the PAN that you require.
  • Fill personal details like name, date of birth and mobile number.
  • Enter the captcha code and select submit.
  • Choose any one of the given methods of authentication – authenticate through Aadhaar or scan documents or physically submit documents.
  • For the online method, you can opt for authenticate through Aadhaar as it needs an OTP and payment. If you select the other options, the steps are similar except for the part where you have to send the documents.

 For authentication via Aadhaar:

  • Enter the Aadhaar details and click on next.
  • Enter your personal details like name, address and mobile number and click on next.
  • Select the option ‘Indian citizen’ among the four options – Indian citizen, foreign and NRI citizen, defence employee or government category.
  • Then Choose the AO Code, select your state and area of residence. Click on the correct AO code and it’ll be auto-filled in the form above. Click Next.
  • Select the documents you have submitted as proof of age and residence from the drop-down menu, fill in the required details, and then click Submit.

Steps to apply for a PAN Offline:

The steps mentioned below can be followed to apply for PAN using the offline method:

  • Download the PAN card application form from the NSDL or UTIISL websites. You can also collect a copy from UTIISL agents.
  • The next thing would be to fill in the form and attach required documents and that would be proof of identity, proof of address, proof of age and photographs.
  • After you have filled the form, submit the form and documents to the NSDL office along with the payment of the processing fee.
  • After following the above steps, the PAN card will be sent to the address mentioned in the form within 15 working days.
