What is an Indian Passport?

An Indian passport is an official document issued by order of the President of India to Indian citizens for the purpose of travelling abroad. The passport is a mandatory document for people travelling internationally. It enables the individual to provide proof of Indian citizenship according to the passport act, 1967. The Ministry of external affairs is responsible for issuing passports to its citizens. The passport Seva unit is authorized with the task of issuing passports on demand to eligible Indian citizens.

Types of Passports issued in India:

There are three types of passports that are issued by the government of India. They are as follows:

  • The regular Indian passport: This type of passport is issued to common citizens and even VIPs and is used for regular or ordinary travel on personal grounds. Also called as Type P where P is indicative of personal, this passport comes in booklets of either 36 or 60 pages. These passports do not provide any special privileges to the holder.
  • The official Indian passport: This type of passport is issued to Government employees who are travelling on National duty to represent the country. These passports are not issued to individuals travelling on overseas assignments, but only to people who travel internationally on official state business. No special privileges are enjoyed by the holder of an Official passport.
  • The diplomatic Indian passport: Probably the most elite kind of all passports, the Diplomatic Indian Passport is given to top ranking officials of the Indian Foreign Service travelling on duty, their dependents and essentially, anyone appointed with the status of a Diplomat.
