The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a government of India initiative introduced in the year 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology. The KVPY program is a national level fellowship program that works towards motivating students studying basic science to pursue a career in research. The program aims to identify meritorious students and encourage them to pursue a career in research. The program offers contingency grants for up to the pre-Ph.D level. The main objective of the program is to help students realise their academic potential and ensure growth of these young aspirants.
The candidates need to qualify the KVPY aptitude test and clear the interview round. The shortlisted candidates are eligible for the KVPY fellowship program. The candidates are eligible to receive fellowship from the 1st year of graduation. A KVPY fellow is eligible to receive Rs. 5000 monthly fellowship from 1st year to 3rd year of B.Sc/ B.Stat/ B.S/ B.Maths/ Integrated M.S/M.Sc along with an annual contingency fund of Rs. 20000. Upon completion of graduation, the fellowship is enhanced to Rs. 7000 per month during the M.Sc along with an annual contingency grant of Rs. 28000.
The scheme is applicable only for the citizens of India. KVPY fellowship program expects the applicant to fulfil the following eligibility criteria that has been categorized into three major streams. They are stream SA, stream SX and stream SB:

The selections procedure of the program involves shortlisting the candidates in two stages, namely aptitude test and interview. The applications received by the selection committee will be scrutinized thoroughly and the applicants who meet the prescribed eligibility criteria for various streams will be called for the aptitude test. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, the short-listed candidates will be asked to appear for an interview. The interview is the final round for the selection procedure, post which the final results will be declared along with the names of the selected candidates.

For enrollment in the fellowship program, the candidate must submit a one-time application fees of Rs. 1000 along with bank charges. The transactions can be carried out online and payments can be made through credit card, debit card or net banking. The application fees for SC/ST/PWD applicants is Rs. 500 plus bank charges.
The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. Candidates who qualify for the aptitude test are called for a face-to-face interview. The shortlisting of candidates are done after the interview based on their merit and fellowships are granted to eligible candidates. Out of one lakh applicants, about 2500 candidates receive fellowship under the KVPY program.
