The year 2020 is full-on weekends and holidays. It’s time for road trips which means driving on highways filled with toll booths. From this December 15th Sunday, you will have to pay double the regular toll amount, on passing through any toll booth if your car doesn’t have FASTag. If you don’t have FASTag for your vehicle, get one fast.
FASTag is prepaid rechargeable tags necessary for toll collection. An automatic payment deduction is allowed from FASTag. These are affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle. With FASTag, there’s no need to stop the vehicle at toll plazas to pay the toll.
When your vehicle crosses the toll plaza, the toll fee gets automatically deducted from your bank account or prepaid wallet, linked to FASTag. FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It doesn’t have an expiry date and can be used as long as it’s readable or not tampered.

You can get FASTag from 22 certified banks through channels like POS terminals at toll plazas of National Highways or select bank branches. They are also available on Amazon and mobile wallets like Paytm.

If FASTag is linked to a bank account, you won’t need to load money separately in your prepaid wallet. Just make sure there’s sufficient balance for toll payments. If FASTag is linked to the prepaid wallet, (This could be NHAI prepaid wallet), get it recharged through UPI, debit card, credit card, NEFT or Net Banking. Additional charges may be involved.
If you have limited KYC FASTag, you can’t have more than Rs 20,000 in the FASTag prepaid wallet. A full KYC FASTag account won’t have more than Rs 1 Lakh in the FASTag prepaid wallet.

Certified Banks charge a maximum of Rs 100 a tag. This is fixed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Tag prices vary across banks.
Toll operators enjoy improved lane utilization with lower operating costs and better audit control. There’s improved transparency at toll transactions with savings on fuel costs and reduction of emissions.

The FASTag is issued only after verification of original documents. When purchasing FASTag from the toll plaza, petrol pump or bank branch make sure to carry original documents for FASTag. The issuer agency fixes the FASTag on the vehicle’s windshield.
