You have filed income tax returns and not received the income tax refund. There would be several other concerns you want the tax department to address. The CBDT or Central Board of Direct Taxes has set up an online e-form mechanism to address all tax-related issues. There’s more good news. It’s confidential. You don’t have to post concerns over Twitter and tag the Income Tax Department.

How to File Income Tax Complaints Online?

  • You must first visit the e-filing portal www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. You then click on-Nivaran on the top right-hand side of the page.
  • You then click on ‘Submit Grievances’ and then enter your PAN or TAN.
  • You then login to the account on the portal.
  • An e-form opens on the following page. You submit the name and PAN details and the grievance.
  • You then provide details related to the assessment year, registered mobile number and email ID. Give a brief description of your concern.
  • A grievance reference number gets generated when you submit the complaint. Make a note of this number to know the status of your complaint.
  • You then click on the e-Nivaran option and make sure to enter the grievance reference number.

How to File Complaint in Income Tax Department against a Person or a company?

You get a reward from the income tax department if you help them catch tax evaders and Benami property under the Income Tax Reward Scheme.

The Benami Property would be procured using some other person’s name. It could also be bought in that person’s spouse or child’s name. You have the opportunity to earn up to a crore. The tax department will keep your identity a secret.

Salient Features of the Income Tax Reward Scheme:

  • You could be awarded a crore on helping the tax department catch tax evaders. It could go up to Rs 5 Crores for catching tax evaders abroad.
  • Government Servants are not eligible for the scheme.
  • There is no amnesty to any benamindar; even if he chooses to be an informant.
  • The rewards are given only after the Benami Property is confiscated. The confiscation must be declared as final, subsequent to the passing of the order.
  • The competent authority can sanction an interim reward of a maximum of 1% of the movable properties fair market value and 1% of the circle rate of immovable property confiscated. The final value can go up to 5% of the movable properties fair market value and 5% of the circle rate of immovable property confiscated.

How Must Information Be Furnished?

You are considered to be an informant only on submitting/furnishing specific information on substantial tax evasion.  You can’t enjoy the benefits of this scheme if you disclose the tax evasion through CDs, Newspapers, social media, SMS or phone.

You must quote the Aadhaar Number in the Annexure-A form. NRIs can mention their Passport Number.

Income Tax Complaints Number

  • You must call the Toll Free Number 1800-180-1961 for any general queries related to income tax. This facility is available between Monday to Saturday from 8AM to 8PM.
  • For any queries related to ITR filing or login problems with the tax e-filing website, call the toll free number 1800-103-0025.
  • For queries related to a tax refund, tax processing, and any rectification, you must contact the helpline number 080-46605200 or 1800-103-4455.
  • For any queries vis-a-vis TRACES, Form 16, Form 15CA, Form 26AS, and TDS statements; contact the helpline 1800-103-0344 and 120-4814600.
  • If you have queries related to TAN and PAN application; contact the helpline number 020-27218080.
