You must be under the impression that a PAN Card is only for people above 18 years. But, this is a popular myth. The Income tax department does not specify an age limit, when you apply for a PAN Card. Even minors can apply for a PAN Card.

But there's a problem....A minor cannot apply for a PAN Card directly with the Income Tax Department. If you have a minor child, you (parent or guardian) will have to apply for the PAN Card.

So, why does a kid require a PAN Card? What's the big need for a PAN Card for a kid?

 

1. Why does your kid require a PAN Card?

  • If you want to make your kid (child) the nominee of your investments like stocks, mutual funds, real estate or any other investment, he/she needs a PAN Card.
  • If you make an investment in your child's name, your child needs a PAN Card.
  • You open a bank account for your child or a Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Account for your daughter? Your minor son/daughter needs a PAN Card.

What if your minor kid is earning?

Generally, a child's income is clubbed with the income of the higher earning parent. But, there are certain cases when a minor's income is taxed in his/her hands. If a minor child suffers from any disability of nature as specified under Section 80U, any income this child earns will be taxed in his/her own hands.

Such an income will not be added to the parent's taxable income. What happens if your kid earns money through specialized knowledge, talent or a skill? Then, in such cases a PAN is compulsory. Your kid will have to file his/her ITR (Income Tax Return) through a representative assessee.

2. What documents you need for minor PAN Card?

A minor cannot apply for a PAN by himself/herself. Parents/Guardians/Representative Assessee has to apply on the minor's behalf. The form for application is the Form 49A, which is same as that of an adult. This form will have to be submitted along with the identity card of the parent/guardian.

These are some of documents used as an identity proof:

  • Copy of electricity bill or telephone bill.
  • Bank account statements
  • Employer certificate
  • Passport or voter identity card
  • Driving license

You will have to attach a copy of your kids birth certificate. For a minors PAN Card, no photograph is required. A minor develops several physical changes over time. So, in the space of a photograph for the PAN Card, the word minor would appear.

Your (Father/Guardian's) signature will appear on the PAN Card. You must submit the Form 49A along with other documents, at the nearest PAN Center. You can also apply online through the National Securities Depository Ltd’s website. You then have to pay the application fees and your minors PAN Card is issued within 15-20 days from the date of application.
