What is Passport Renewal?

 Passports are generally valid for ten years from the date of issue and need periodic renewal. Passports must be renewed, if not you cannot avail the benefits of passport including traveling abroad. Renewal of passport is required when the passport has expired or when it is about to expire. You can renew your passport 1 year before the expiry date.

How To Renew Passport In India?

Renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP) is at the sole discretion of the regional passport officer or assistant regional passport officer. The validity period of Short Validity Passport (SVP) after renewal depends on the decision of a regional passport officer or assistant regional passport officer. SVPs are usually issued to students who are in need of Passports to take up an International exam/test and these passports will be valid for 5 years.

SVPs are also issued to those applicants who have criminal allegations over them and have a case running in court. SVPs are issued to those applicants on the condition that they get written approval from the court. The validity of minors’ passports is 5 years and these can be renewed when the applicant reaches the age of 15 years.

You must be visiting the passport office to renew a passport. Registering online for the passport renewal process is mandatory. You must register for the passport renewal process in India by Filling in the Passport Renewal Application form available on the official website of passport India. Documents required for passport renewal

Below Mentioned are the Documents required for a Passport renewal if the reason is ‘exhaustion of pages’ and ‘validity to expire’;

  • Old Passport in original with the two self-attested photocopies of the same, of the first and the last pages.
  • Proof of address (If the residential address mentioned in the old Passport is different from the current address)
  • Documents supporting ECR or non-ECR status of the applicant (not applicable for minor applicants)
  • Annexure D (in case of the minor applicant)
  • Annexure E if you are applying under Tatkaal category

Below Mentioned are the Documents Required if the Renewal Reason is ‘Extension of Validity of SVP’;

  • Old Passport in original with two self-attested photocopies of the same of the first and last pages.
  • Address Proof (If the residential address mentioned in the old Passport is different from the current address).
  • Documents which eliminate the cause of issuance of Short Validity Passport
  • Documents supporting ECR or non-ECR status of the applicant (not applicable for minor applicants)
  • Annexure D (in case of the minor applicant)
  • Annexure E if you are applying under Tatkaal category.

  • Aadhaar card
  • Voter ID
  • Electricity bill
  • Water bill
  • Telephone bill
  • Gas bill
  • Rental agreement
  • Property tax assessment
  • Passbook (attested by the branch manager) of a running bank account
  • Certificate from reputed companies on the company letter head
  • Spouse’s passport copy
  • Parents’ passport copy (in case of minor applicants)

You Must Follow the Below Steps to Register online for Passport Renewal:

  • Log on to www.passportindia.gov.in
  • If you already have an account, then click on ‘existing user’, if not then create an account to proceed.
  • Click on ‘apply for fresh/re-issue of passport’
  • Click on ‘application form online
  • Select the category under which you wish to apply, click on ‘re-issue of Passport’ option. Now, you will be asked to click on the reason for re-issue.
  • Choose the category; either normal or Tatkaal. If you choose Tatkaal, then note that you must pay an additional fee of Rs 2,000.
  • You need to choose the number of pages that you would want in the passport.
  • Fill out your personal details and make a submission.
  • Please note that you cannot modify any details after submitting the application, so make sure that you don’t make any mistakes while filling up the form.
  • Post submission, you will be taken to a payment gateway, you can either pay online through net banking, debit card and a credit card or you can pay offline through the bank deposit. 
  • After the payment is successful, you will be allotted (appointment is given) the earliest available slot at the PSK, you chose earlier.
  • The applicant must be visiting the Passport Office to renew the Passport at the given appointment with the required documents for verification.
  • Make the payment (if any) at the PSK.
  • You will be given a passport tracking number if the application status is ‘successful’.
  • Your Passport will be dispatched by speed post and delivered at the address mentioned on the Passport.
  • Police verification would be done accordingly, depending on the category you have applied under (normal and Tatkaal).

Difference between Renewal and Reissue of Passports

Renewal of a passport is done free of cost, whereas reissue of Passports are done at applicable charges, depending on the category applied. A passport is reissued to those applicants whose old passport is damaged or lost, Passports will be ‘renewed’ when the applicant’s passport has expired or is due to expire. A passport would be reissued when there are any changes to be made like change in name, change in spouse’s name, change in address and change in the signature.
