How To Verify Income Tax Returns?

 

 

You have filed ITR within the August 31st deadline. But, did you remember the last step? The final step when filing income tax return or ITR is to verify it. Otherwise, it’s not valid under Income Tax Laws.

Let’s say you have uploaded ITR on the income tax e-filing website. You now have 120 days to verify ITR. You have 5 electronic methods of verifying ITR and one physical method. You can use these methods only when filing ITR, which doesn’t need to be audited. (These are ITR-1, ITR-2 and ITR-4 for AY 2019-20). Let’s take a look at some of the methods of filing ITR.

How To Verify Income Tax Returns?

1. Verify ITR with Aadhaar-Based OTP

You can verify ITR using Aadhaar-based OTP. This is the Aadhaar based One Time Password. The mobile number must be linked with Aadhaar. The mobile number must be registered with UIDAI. The PAN must be linked with Aadhaar.

You must go to “My Account” and then click on ‘e-verify return’. You then click on ‘I would like to generate Aadhaar OTP to e-verify my return. You get an SMS with the 6 digit OTP sent to registered mobile number.

You then enter OTP in the requisite box and click on Submit. The ITR gets verified on a successful submission. The Aadhaar based OTP is valid only for 30 minutes.

2. Net-Banking to Generate EVC

Do you have the Net Banking Facility? You can easily verify ITR. Do remember that only select banks can verify ITR. Make sure your PAN is registered with the bank.

You can verify ITR using Net Banking Facility by:

  • Logging in to your bank’s Net Banking Facility.
  • You then select the e-verify option found under the “Tax” tab.
  • You then click on “My Account Tab” and then select the option “Generate EVC”. You find the 10-digit alpha-numeric code sent to email and mobile number. This code is valid only for 72 hours. You then go to the e-verify option under ‘My Account Tab’ and verify ITR. You then select the option. “I have EVC already”. You then enter the OTP received on mobile number, which is registered with your bank. You then click on submit and your ITR is verified.

3. Verify ITR Through Demat Account

You can use the demat account to verify ITR. This is just like bank account based ITR validation. You would have to pre-validate demat account to verify ITR.

You would have to go to profile settings and enter mobile number, email ID, depository name like NSDL and CDSL. Make sure the mobile number and email ID is linked to demat account.

You can use the demat account to generate EVC only after CDSL or NSDL verifies and validates details.

  • You must go to ‘Generate EVC’ Option and then select ‘Generate EVC through demat account’. You then enter EVC received on registered mobile number and successfully verify ITR. (To change mobile number and email, you will have to revalidate with NSDL or CDSL).

Physical Verification of ITR:

There are chances you cannot verify ITR through electronic methods. You would have to send a signed copy of ITR-V to the IT Department. Before sending ITR-V take a look at these points:

  • The ITR-V is a document of one-page, which you must sign in blue ink. This could be sent through ordinary or speed post. (You cannot courier this document). You don’t need to send any supporting documents.
  • You get intimation via SMS on mobile and email ID after ITR is received by tax department. This intimation is for ITR-V receipt and not for processing ITR.
