What is Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme?

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme is a non-contributory scheme launched by the Ministry of Rural Development in India, to provide pension to people above 60 years of age, living below the poverty line (BPL). It is a social pension scheme and a part of the National Social Assistance Program (NSAP). The scheme provides a monthly income for citizens or to refugees above 60 years, who have no other source of income.

National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP):

National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) is a scheme launched by the Union Government that provides financial assistance to the elderly people with disabilities and also widows by giving them monthly pensions. These schemes are offered to people or households who are living below the poverty line. The National Social Assistance Program came into force on the 15th of August 1955.

Features of Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme:

Listed below are the main features of Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension Scheme:

  • Senior citizens are given monthly grants/pension under the IGNOAP scheme.
  • This is a non-contributory scheme, where the beneficiary does not contribute any amount to receive the pension.

Eligibility Criteria:

An applicant must meet the below mentioned eligibility criteria to apply to the IGNOAP scheme:

  • The applicant must be either 60 years or above to avail benefits under this scheme.
  • The beneficiary of the scheme must be listed under the Government as an individual living below the poverty line.
  • The applicant is eligible if he/she has no regular sources of income or financial support from family members.
  • The applicant must not have any severe disabilities; else he is not eligible for the scheme.

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Amount:

There are two categories of pension offered according to the age of the beneficiary. For BPL citizens of age group 60-79 years, the pension amount is Rs 200 a month. BPL citizens who are 80 years or above receive a pension amount of Rs 500 a month.

Documents Required:

The documents that must be submitted by the applicants of Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension scheme are given below:

  • Passport size photographs
  • A copy of Proof of age attested by the block medical officer
  • Income certificate
  • Below Poverty Line (BPL) card
  • Bank passbook or post office passbook
  • Duly filled application form from IGNOAP

Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Application Procedure:

Given below are the steps that the applicant must follow to apply to the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme. To apply to this scheme, the applicants in the rural area must visit the Block Development Office and the District Social Welfare Officer to apply for the IGNOAP scheme in the urban area:

  • Visit the Social Welfare Department in your area and get the application form.
  • Provide appropriate details in the form when filling it. The form contains the following fields:
  • State/District/Block
  • Name of the village panchayat
  • Society name
  • Beneficiary name
  • Heir’s name
  • House number
  • Gender
  • Age in years
  • Date of birth
  •  Birth certificate
  •  Annual income and certificate
  •  Domicile certificate
  •  Certificate issuance date
  •  EPIC Number
  • The duly filled form must be attached with the supporting documents and submitted to the social welfare officer.
  • The application will be thoroughly scrutinized and verified by the social welfare officer.
  • The Social Welfare Department will then recommend the beneficiaries to the district social welfare officer.
  • If the verification process is complete and the form is sanctioned by the district social welfare officer, the final sanction would be done by District Level Sanctioning Committee.

How to track your Application Online?

After applying for the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme he/she can track the application by visiting the official website of the NASP. The process of tracking the application is as follows:

  • Go to the homepage of NASP
  • Select ‘more reports’ from the home page
  • The search redirects you to the next page. You have to then select  ‘application track option’
  • Enter the application number
  •  Click on search to complete the process
  • The status of your application will be displayed

Mode of Payment of Pension Amount:

The Government will directly transfer the pension amount to the bank account or post office account of the beneficiary, as per the documents submitted by the applicant.

Old Age Pension Payment Details Online:

The applicant can easily find the pension payment details online by visiting the official NASP website. The details can be found in two ways:

  • By entering sanction order number/ application number.
  • By selecting the name option. In this case the applicant has to verify the mobile number and name of the applicant. To get the payment details, the applicant must also select the State and District from the dropdown menu.
