  • Verifying income tax returns: Using e-verification for filing income tax returns by providing the details of Aadhaar card online. This makes the process of filing returns less time-consuming and hassle free. The income tax filing can be done by linking the PAN and the Aadhaar card.

Proof of identity and proof of address are the documents required to apply for Aadhaar card. The list of acceptable documents is:

  • Election Photo ID card
  • Ration Card
  • Passport
  • Driving License
  • PAN Card
  • Account statement or passbook of the post office
  • Photo identification cards issued by the government
  • Latest 3 months electricity bill
  • Water bill of last 3 months
  • PSU issued service photo ID card with address
  • Insurance policy
  • Previous 3 months telecom bill
  • Credit card statement of previous 3 months
  • Receipt showing the property tax
  • Photo and a letter with address signed by the bank
  • Job card of NREGA
  • Pension card
  • Freedom fighter card
  • Kisan passbook
  • Signed letter with address and photo on the letterhead of the company issued by the registered office.
  • Photo and signed letter with address issued by a well-known educational enterprise on their letterhead.
  • Gas connection bill of last 3 months
  • CGHS card

  • Address certificate issued by the Village Panchayat head
  • Registration certificate of the vehicle
  • Assessment order of the income tax
  • Registration agreement for sale, lease or rent of the applicant’s residential address

How to check the Aadhaar card status online?

After successfully applying for the Aadhaar card at the enrolment centre, the applicants will receive an acknowledgement slip that will contain the enrolment ID which can be used to check the status of Aadhaar. To check the status of Aadhaar card online, you can follow the steps given below:

  • Go to the official UIDAI website
  • Click ‘Check Aadhaar status’ and enter the enrolment number
  • The applicants have to submit a security code.
  • Click the ‘check status’ button.
  • The status of the applicant’s Aadhaar card will be shown on the screen.

The UIDAI provides online service to download and print the soft copy of Aadhaar card which is accepted everywhere.


 Is Aadhaar card mandatory?

According to the Supreme Court verdict, Aadhaar card linking is not mandatory for bank accounts and mobile. The Supreme Court said that Aadhaar is not mandatory for mobile connections and no school, company or institute can force anyone to reveal their Aadhaar card number.

However, there are some services where linking of Aadhaar card is mandatory like filing for income tax returns or availing the benefits of government welfare schemes.

The Supreme Court has also instructed the state to refrain from asking for Aadhaar details for various services like getting gas connections, for marriage registrations and vehicle registration. But, Aadhaar card enables people to save time by enabling the Aadhaar based authentication. So, Aadhaar has become deeply entrenched in the lives of people.

What is eAadhaar card?

The e-Aadhaar is the digital form of Aadhaar card. It is the electronic format of the Aadhaar card and can be easily downloaded and printed. The e-Aadhaar is a digitally signed legally valid document, as per the Aadhaar act 2016. The e-Aadhaar can be downloaded from the UIDAI online portal. This helps the card holder gain access to important identification documents like the Aadhaar card anytime, anywhere.
