Kerala Floods: How To Protect Your Car?

The Kerala floods have destroyed cars, with engines submerged for hours. The engine is the heart of the car and gets damaged if it is started in water-logged areas. Water gets sucked into the engine causing permanent damage. If the car engine is submerged for hours, it gets totally destroyed.

1. What is car insurance?

Car insurance plans in India are of 2 types. You have the third party liability insurance and a comprehensive car insurance plan. The third party liability insurance compensates a third party, who is injured or his/her vehicle/property damaged in an accident, caused by you. It’s compulsory to avail third party liability insurance in India.

A comprehensive car insurance plan protects your car from damage caused by floods, earthquakes and natural calamities. But, even a comprehensive car insurance plan, doesn’t cover all damages to your vehicle. This is why you need add-ons with a car insurance plan.

2. Add-ons with a car insurance plan

Auto insurance plans do not cover damage to engines caused due to engine seizure. This happens when a car is started or driven through a water-logged area, very common in flood hit areas of Kerala.

The rules are clear. Stop driving so that water does not get sucked into the engine. But, the engine may get submerged, causing monetary losses in Lakhs. This is why you need an engine protector plan.

  • What is an engine protection plan: If you had availed an engine protection plan as an add-on with a comprehensive car insurance plan, your car would be protected, saving lakhs of rupees. If the car engine, cylinder, piston, crankshaft, gearbox was damaged due to water ingression in the flood waters of Kerala, you would be compensated on having an engine protection plan. You are also protected from lubricating oil leakage and hydrostatic lock.

  • What is the return to invoice cover: Imagine is a tree falls on your car? Many trees were uprooted and landed on top of cars in the Kerala Floods, completely flattening them. This is where the return to invoice cover helps. The return to invoice cover reimburses you on the difference between the ex-showroom price and the Insured Declared Value popularly called IDV. You are also compensated for registration fees, road tax and insurance amount if your vehicle is totally destroyed or stolen during the floods.

  • What is accessories cover: Just think of all the water entering the car cabin in the floods? Car accessories like TV, LCD or seat covers would be totally destroyed. If you avail accessories cover as an add-on in the comprehensive car insurance plan, you are compensated for the loss.

  • What is roadside assistance cover: This is an add-on in a car insurance plan, which can save you from the floods of Kerala. A roadside assistance cover is very useful if your car is stranded in floods. If your vehicle breaks down in floods and you are stranded in the middle of the road, the insurer will offer emergency roadside assistant services like changing tyres if they are punctured, emergency refueling of the vehicle or the towing facility 24*7.
