This is a simple, easy to use reloadable tag which enables automatic deduction of toll charges. You can pass through a toll plaza without having to stop for cash transactions. FASTag uses RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology; which is affixed to your vehicle’s windscreen when tag account is active. The Government would make FASTag compulsory for all vehicles from December 2019.
FASTag is a sticker which has an electronic chip, fixed to your vehicle windshield from inside the car. FASTag is linked to a prepaid account and applicable toll gets deducted, when you pass through the toll.
FASTag gives you the perfect hassle free trip on the highway. It is currently operational on 420+ toll plazas across state and national highways. Soon more toll plazas would be brought under FASTag program.

The RFID is a 16 digit numeric number which starts with 6xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Wallet ID is a 14 digit numeric number which starts with 17xxxxxxxxxxx and 18xxxxxxxxxxx.
The FASTag also called RFID tag is fixed on your vehicle’s windshield. When the vehicle approaches the toll plaza, the unique identification number which is embedded on the tag, is read by the RFID reader at the road side. The toll amount gets deducted from the prepaid account, linked to that particular FASTag.

The user fees at a particular fee plaza depends on stretch length under that particular plaza, structures (bridge, tunnel, bypass) and width of the highways, applicable fee rules and provisions of concession agreements. The spacing between two adjacent toll plazas must be 60 Kms.

FASTag can track vehicle movements and toll booth cameras would capture traffic violations. This could prevent crime and catch tax evaders. However, questions on misuse of FASTag are a big concern.
There were several concerns on sharing Aadhaar details with banks or telecom companies. The Supreme Court last year had also ruled that Aadhaar can only be used for welfare schemes and state subsides. Private Companies cannot use Aadhaar data for authenticating customers.
FASTag is linked to Vahan Database. (Vahan is the National Vehicle Database). There are privacy concerns as the Government has given access to this database to Government and Private entities. About 32 government and 87 private entities have access to Vahan and Sarathi database. The Personal Data Protection Bill is a work still in the making. There are few regulatory measures to punish FASTag data breaches.
