Challan 280 refers to a form used for the payment of income tax, both online and offline. Challan 280 is important as it is used to pay advance tax, self-assessment tax and regular assessment tax.

Income Tax Challan 280 online payment:

The online process using challan 280 is given below:

  • To pay income tax online, you have to visit the official website of NSDL.
  • On the home page click on ‘services tab’ and a drop-down menu appears.
  • You have to then click on ‘e-payment: pay taxes online’ option from the drop-down menu.
  • The website will redirect you to the payments page. You have to select the ‘click to pay tax online’ to get access to the e-payment page.
  • Select ‘challan no/ITNS 280’ from the options provided and click on the ‘proceed’ button.
  • A page appears containing the challan, you have to fill all mandatory fields like applicable tax, permanent account number (PAN), assessment year and so on.
  • Among the options given, select ‘income tax’ to pay personal income tax.
  • A list appears containing options like advance tax, tax on distributed income, self assessment tax and tax on regular assessment. You have to select the type of payment you want to make.
  • You have to choose the mode of payment from the given options.
  • Select the bank through which you want to make payment. The names of the banks will appear next to the selected payment option.
  • Enter your PAN details and relevant year of assessment from the drop-down menu in the section provided.
  • In the next section, enter your personal details like name, address, district, state, pin code along with e-mail ID and mobile number.
  • Enter the Captcha Code in the given field and click on the ‘Proceed’ button.
  • Once the payment is completed, a confirmation receipt will be displayed on the bank’s website.
  • The acknowledgement receipt contains details of your payment, challan identification number and bank name.

Pay Your Tax with Challan 280 (Offline):

If you opt to pay income tax through the offline method, then you must follow the steps given below:

  • For offline submission of income tax, you must download challan 280 from the NSDL website.
  • Provide correct information along with personal details in the form like PAN number, mobile number, name, year of assessment, amount and so on.
  • You have to physically visit the bank branch and pay the income tax amount along with the duly filled challan 280 to complete the payment process.

Proof of Payment of Tax:

After the payment of the income tax, a receipt is generated and provided. The receipt contains details of the payment made like challan identification number, date of payment of tax, amounts paid and so on. A CIN is generated only on successful payment as an acknowledgement for taxes received. The CIN number is generally used for filing income tax returns. Given below is the information provided on the CIN:

  • Challan number
  • 7-digit BSR code of the bank branch where the tax is deposited
  • Date of payment of tax

Income Tax Challan Status:

To track your challan status online, you must visit the official website of NSDL and provide details like challan identification number, challan serial number, bank’s BSR code and challan tender date.

Correction of Details:

You can raise a request for correction of details provided in the challan payment information in case of any typing errors or incorrect information. In the payments challan only the following fields can be corrected:

  • Year of assessment
  • Mode of payment
  • Major head code and minor head code
  • Amount
  • Tax deduction and collection number (TAN) or permanent account number (PAN).
