Stock market is where buyers and sellers trade in listed securities of Companies, through authorized brokers. The first ever stock exchange was setup at Amsterdam in 1602, to trade in the shares of the Dutch East India Company. Stock markets have fixed timings and you can place trades only during this time.

What Time Does The Stock Market Open?

Stock Market Timings in India

National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) are the most popular stock exchanges in India. The timings of both NSE and BSE are the same. These two stock markets are open from Monday to Friday, between 9.15 AM to 3.30 PM. Stock markets are closed on public and national holidays. There are no breaks for lunch and tea in the stock markets. They are open throughout the day from 9.15 AM to 3.30 PM. The timings of commodity market are 10 AM to 11:30 PM, from Monday to Friday. The trade timing for Agri-community market is from 10 AM to 5 PM, from Monday to Friday.

Normal Trading Session

This is the actual session in which most of the trades happen. The market opens at 9.15 AM and closes at 3.30 PM, from Monday to Friday. Individuals buy and sell stocks within these timings.

Pre-Opening Session: Timeframe between 9 AM to 9.15 AM is referred to as the pre-opening session. This is further divided as follows:

9:00 AM to 9:08 AM:

  • You can enter your order in this duration.
  • You are allowed to place orders to sell or buy stocks.
  • You are also allowed to modify or cancel orders in this duration.

9:08 AM to 9:12 AM:

  • This duration is for order matching and opening price is calculated in this duration.
  • You are not allowed to modify or cancel orders in this duration.

9:12 AM to 9:15 AM:

  • This session is referred to as the buffer session.
  • This session facilitates the smooth translation of the pre-opening session to the normal session.

Post closing Session: This duration is further divided as follows:

 3.30 PM to 3.40 PM:

  • Closing price of stocks is determined in this time duration.

3.40 PM to 4 PM:

  • You can sell and buy stocks at closing price in this duration.
  • If buyers and sellers are available in this duration, then your order would be confirmed.

The timing of major stock markets in the World are as follows:

1) New York Stock Exchange, United States of America: 9.30 AM to 4 PM.

2) NASDAQ, United States of America: 9.30 AM to 4 PM.

3) Toronto Stock Exchange, Canada: 9.30 AM to 4 PM

4) Tokyo Stock Exchange, Japan: 9 AM to 3 PM

5) Shanghai Stock Exchange, China: 9.30 AM to 3 PM

6) Hong Kong Stock Exchange, China: 9.30 AM to 4 PM

7) London Stock Exchange, United Kingdom: 8 AM to 4.30 PM

8) Euronext, Eurozone: 9 AM to 5.40 PM

9) Shenzhen Stock Exchange, China: 9.30 AM to 3 PM

10) Bombay Stock Exchange, India: 9.15 AM to 3.30 PM.
