What is UDIN?

UDIN stands for unique document identification number which is generated by the UDIN portal whenever a document is attested and certified through this portal. UDIN portal is developed by ICAI to keep the system transparent, curb professional malpractices and to maintain the authenticity of documents.

Why is UDIN Required?

UDIN is a number generated by the UDIN portal for each document attested or certified through the portal. The UDIN service can be used only by registered chartered accountants.

The registration process is very simple where the member/ users have to provide membership number, date of birth and year of enrolment. UDIN has been implemented to restrict the malpractices like forging of chartered accountant signatures by non-authorized entities or attesting documents by third parties.

There is a feature on the UDIN portal, through which full-time chartered accountants can attest documents and certify them in their individual capacities or as partners. These measures help the ICAI trace forged documents, ensure authenticity and safeguard the interests of members.

Why Do We Need UDIN (Unique Document Identification Number)?

Format of UDIN:

UDIN is a 15-digit unique number generated on the UDIN portal. Given below is the format in which the UDIN number is generated:

  • The initial 6 digits comprise of the CA membership registration number.
  • The next 6 digits comprise of the date of issuance of the certificate.
  • The last 3 digits signify the serial number of the UDIN generated document.

How to Register on UDIN Portal?

The chartered accountant working as a full time professional must mandatorily register themselves on the UDIN portal. In order to generate the UDIN numbers, follow the steps given below:

  • Visit the official website of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in India.
  • Click on the first time sign-up option on the left side of the screen under the member’s login option.
  • A page appears where you have to enter the membership number, date of birth and year of enrolment in the fields provided.
  • Click on the send OTP button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Enter the e-mail address registered with ICAI and select the continue button.
  • Your login credentials will be auto-generated by the system.
  • You will receive login credentials on your registered e-mail account immediately.

Verification of Documents Using UDIN:

The verification of documents is done through the UDIN portal to maintain transparency in the system and end professional malpractices. UDIN is an authentic system generated number, through which the various entities like banks, firms and individuals can check the authenticity of their documents. UDIN can be used only by registered members; therefore, a UDIN number can be used to check the validity of an attested document.

The validity of these documents can also be verified using the client reference code, firm registration number, date of attesting the document on the UDIN portal.

UDIN is a one-time number generated for each document. The number generated for any particular document cannot be changed or modified in any manner. Therefore, the user needs to be careful while using this feature.

However, there are instances where the documents need certain changes or must be cancelled. In such cases, the document can be revoked by finding the document through the UDIN number and selecting the revoke option.

The user must give the reasons on why the document must be revoked. After making the necessary changes to the revoked document, the document still contains the same UDIN. Once revoked, the document will continue to display “revoked” whenever searched on the UDIN portal.
