UN official expresses concern over Tuticorin deaths

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) chief Erik Solheim today expressed concern over the death of 13 people in police firing during violent protests against the Vedanta group's copper smelter plant in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district. The UNEP executive director general said he was "worried" and hoped that protests would remain non-violent.

Petrol prices rise for the 13th straight day; almost Rs 78 in Delhi

Domestic petrol prices increased for the 13th day in a row on Saturday, with the fuel being sold at Rs 77.97 per litre in the national capital. The price rose to Rs 77.97 in Delhi from Rs 77.83 a litre on Friday, data from the Indian Oil Corp website showed.

China's WeChat blocks 'shady' sugar daddy service

Another Nipah virus death in Kozhikode, toll now 13

Even as the incidence of fresh cases of Nipah virus has come down, a woman, under treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College hospital, passed away on Saturday, taking the disease toll in Kerala to 13, officials said. A majority of the deaths have been reported from Kozhikode, while the others are in the nearby Malappuram district.

Paytm Says Never Shared Indian Users' Data With Third Parties

Bank cashier arrested for duping senior citizen of Rs 1.88 cr in Pune

A 45-year-old man was arrested and sent to police custody for duping a senior citizen of close to Rs 1,88,00,000. The man was identified as Niraj Prabhakar Tilak, a resident of Amar park near Lokhande Taleem in Narayan peth. Tilak works as a cashier at a local branch of HDFC bank, according to the police.

Infant dies 'due to heat' in train, passengers create ruckus

A five-month-old infant died in a sleeper coach in Dibrugarh-New Delhi Brahmaputra Mail allegedly due to excessive heat on Friday. According to reports, the train had halted on the outers of Allahabad junction for an extended period, following which the condition of the already ill child deteriorated. Passengers created a ruckus at the junction alleging negligence by railway officials.

Reserve Bank of India data shows rise in big-ticket bank frauds

Data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that big-ticket frauds against banks have been rising consistently in the last decade. In 2008-09, the average amount involved in advances (loan) related fraud, where the amount involved was more than Rs 1 lakh, was Rs.75 lakh. This increased to Rs.9 crore in 2017-18.

All 7 ITR forms released for e-filing

The Income Tax Department today launched and activated all the seven ITR forms for e-filing by taxpayers, after more than a month of them being notified. The Central Board of Direct Taxes had notified the new Income Tax Return forms for the assessment year 2018-19 on April 5. "All ITRs for AY 2018-19 is now available for e-filing," the department said in a statement.
