Sterlite plant would not be re-opened: Tamil Nadu government

The TN government asserted that the Sterlite Industries' plant in Tuticorin would not be re-opened as its policy decision to seal the Vedanta Ltd unit was in line with people's sentiments. This comes on a day when a three-member panel appointed by the NGT and led by former Meghalaya HC Chief Justice, is slated to visit the copper smelter plant in the southern district.
Groundwater in TN's Sterlite plant area contaminated beyond limit

A study by a central agency in the area around the Sterlite Copper plant in Tamil Nadu has indicated groundwater contamination with heavy metals beyond permissible limits, the Centre said on Monday. The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) has carried out a study to ascertain the groundwater quality in and around (the) State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ISPCOT) industrial area.
Sterlite copper plant shutdown could cost $100 million

Vedanta Ltd would suffer a loss of about $100-million if its Thoothukudi Sterlite copper plant in Tamil Nadu continues to remain shut for a year, chairman Anil Agarwal told. The Sterlite copper plant has been shut since May after the TN government cut power supply to the unit, following violent protests over alleged pollution resulted in the death of 13 people in police firing.
