Curfew lifted in Shillong, streets decked out in X-mas lights

Curfew was on Sunday morning lifted in Shillong, as no report of violence or arson over the amended citizenship Act was reported from any part of the city, officials said. People were seen flocking to local shops to buy essential items and Christmas goodies and gifts. Streets in the state capital were being decked out in Christmas lights and festoons since morning.

The Meghalaya government assured a Punjab government delegation on Thursday that it was "duty-bound" to protect the people of all communities living in the state. Meghalaya Home Minister James PK Sangma gave this assurance to a four-member delegation from the northern state, Punjab MP Jasbir Singh Gill told mediapersons in Shillong. The Meghalaya government is sincere and wants to restore normalcy.

The Punjab government announced a compensation for the violence hit Sikh community in Shillong, Meghalaya. Sikhs and their properties were attacked during the clashes between the tribals and non-tribals including Sikhs. The Captain Amarinder Singh government approved relaxation in instructions of the Relief and Resettlement Department for providing Rs.60L as compensation to the Sikh-community against damage caused to their properties during violence in Shillong.
