Indian sailor Abhilash Tomy, who was under medical observation at Ile Amsterdam after sustaining grievous injuries while participating in the Golden Globe Race, was brought to Visakhapatnam safely Saturday, a Navy statement said. September 21, his sailing vessel ‘Thuriya’ was caught in a violent storm in the South Indian Ocean.

Injured Indian Navy sailor Abhilash Tomy, rescued in a multi-nation operation from the Indian Ocean near Australia, is set to return home. Last month, Tomy, who was sailing his boat as part of the Golden Globe Race, a solo sailboat race around the world, drifted in the seas for three days. His boat was hit by a storm, about 1,900 nautical miles from Perth.

An Indian and an Irish sailor rescued from damaged sailboats in the remote southern Indian-Ocean will be delivered to land on Tuesday when they reach an island and undergo medical-assessments. The French fisheries patrol-boat Osiris rescued injured Indian Navy Commander Abhilash-Tomy, 39, and Irishman Gregor McGuckin, 32, late Monday after their boats lost masts in a storm Friday while competing in the around-the-world Golden-Globe-Race.
