
Soon, special drive to double Kisan Credit Cards to 14 crore

Seeking to bring all landholding cultivators within the institutional credit system, the Centre is set to launch a special drive to reach out to all farmers with Kisan Credit Cards(KCCs) by doubling its footprint from 6.95 crore to around 14 crore active cards ahead of general elections. The aim is to issue KCCs to eligible farmers within two weeks of submission of application forms.

Private insurers set to make Rs 3000 crore profit from crop cover, PSUs in loss

ELEVEN private insurers are set to register profits of over Rs.3,000Cr cumulatively from crop insurance business for year-ending March 2018 as against Rs.4,085Cr losses incurred by state-owned insurers, raising questions about allocation of business. Premiums collected by private insurers from the government were higher than the claims made by farmers for crop losses due to floods, earthquakes or shortfall of rain during the year.

Strengthen agriculture by long-term structural changes: Venkaiah Naidu

Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu called for strengthening agriculture by bringing in long-term structural changes as farming is our-basic-culture providing livelihood to nearly 60% of our population. Agriculture has to be made profitable, sustainable and resilient and farmers have to be encouraged to diversify into allied activities like poultry, horticulture and fishing to ensure sustainable livelihood, which can ensure home-grown food security for all, he said.
