Government mulls algorithm boost to farm insurance payouts

The Union agriculture ministry is looking at algorithms to fix delays in paying farmers their claims under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), a major issue hobbling the flagship crop insurance scheme. The government is experimenting with big data analytics, artificial intelligence(AI) and machine learning to quicken assessment of crop damage, a lengthy and often disputed mechanism, people familiar with the matter said.

Cash subsidies to now directly reach farm exporters bank accounts

The government has decided to directly transfer cash subsidies into bank-accounts of farm produce exporters, in an-attempt-to make Indian agricultural produce globally competitive and boost-exports of branded farm-products, officials with direct knowledge of matter said on condition of anonymity. The scheme came into effect on March 1 and will be valid till March 31, 2020. Depending on response, it could be extended, officials added.

Soon, special drive to double Kisan Credit Cards to 14 crore

Seeking to bring all landholding cultivators within the institutional credit system, the Centre is set to launch a special drive to reach out to all farmers with Kisan Credit Cards(KCCs) by doubling its footprint from 6.95 crore to around 14 crore active cards ahead of general elections. The aim is to issue KCCs to eligible farmers within two weeks of submission of application forms.
