Airtels own estimate puts AGR dues at a third of DoT demand

Bharti Airtel own assessment of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues is nearly a third of the government's as it has taken into account certain deductions the telecom department had initially refused and also duplicated entries, among other discrepancies, a person familiar with the matter said. Airtel has self-assessed its AGR dues at Rs 13,004-crore, compared with nearly Rs 40,000-crore as calculated by the DoT.

India's Bharti Airtel Ltd said it was complying with a Supreme Court order to pay dues, after it paid more than 80 billion rupees ($1.10-billion) to the DoT on Saturday. The court, which had ordered Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel among others, to pay 920 billion rupees in overdue levies and interest by Jan. 23, rejected petitions last month to review its October order.

The government's demand from such companies was many times more than their net worth.
