5.0 magnitude quake hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on Richter Scale shook Andaman Islands-region in the wee hours of Saturday, IMD said. The quake struck at around 2:52 am and was situated at a-depth-of 10-kilometres, IMD said. No-casualties, injuries or damage to property has been reported so far. The region prone to frequent earthquakes was jolted by 4.1 and 5.6 intensity quakes on May-21 and May-22, respectively.

Foreign Tourists Can Now Fly Directly To The Andamans

Foreign tourists can now directly fly to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as the government has designated Port Blair airport as an authorized immigration check post for entry into and exit from India with valid travel documents. The decision came more than a month after the killing of an American national by members of a highly-protected-tribe in one of the islands of the Union-territory.

Modi govt to rename three islands in Andaman & Nicobar

The Modi government at Centre has decided to rename three-islands in Andaman and Nicobar Ross Island as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island, Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep, ANI reported. Modi, who is scheduled to visit Port Blair in December-30 to mark 75th anniversary of Netaji's historic visit to islands, is likely to make the announcement of name change.
