Antarctic Sea Ice In Dizzying Decline Since 2014: Study

After mysteriously expanding for decades, Antarctica's sea ice cover melted by an area four times greater than France in just a-few-years and now stands at a record low, according to a study published Monday. Scientists already knew Antarctica was thawing at an increasing rate, like the Arctic, because of accelerating discharge from glaciers, the rivers of ice that push up slowly against the shore.

World's First Battery-Powered Cruise Ship To Sail For The Arctic

The world's first-cruise-ship propelled partially by battery power is set to head out from northern Norway on its maiden voyage, cruise operator Hurtigruten said. The hybrid expedition cruise ship, the Roald Amundsen, can take 500 passengers and is designed to sail in harsh climate waters. Battery technology for propelling ships is in its infancy, even on shorter routes, as few ports provide charging stations.

7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Near Antarctica, No Tsunami Warning

A magnitude 7.1 quake struck in the southern Pacific Ocean, close to the South Sandwich Islands north of Antarctica, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.5, was in a remote area and fairly deep underground. The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in an advisory that it did not cause a tsunami threat.
