Top Army commanders will deliberate extensively on security challenges facing the country and ways to enhance its combat edge over potential adversaries at a week-long conference beginning Monday. "Important issues that are likely to be discussed are management of the extant security dynamics, mitigation of future security threats and enhancement of combat edge over potential adversaries," the Army said in a statement.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat said today that the Indian Army is "not yet ready" for women in combat roles, adding that there are non-combat roles where women are already being inducted. He explained that "facilities" need to be created and women need to undergo "hardships" of a combat role to be battle-ready, and that would still need time.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said Russians are very keen on associating with the Indian Army because "we are a very capable Army". "We may be associating with America...but we follow an independent policy," the Army Chief added, while stressing on the independence of Indian policymaking amid fears of US sanctions over the S-400 missile deal with Russia.
