FB, Whatsapp Are Accountable For Fake News, Not Users

Telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan has said the Indian government is considering to make social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp responsible for the spread of fake news rather than holding users accountable. She said, "Users are sometimes unaware and innocently retweet or forward content". She added a full-fledged team should be present in India, accountable to the country's laws.
DoT Receives 40-50 Million Consumer Complaints Annually: Sundararajan

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) receives 40-50 million complaints a year, DoT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said. The significance of government policies, the secretary said: "It is also important that in terms of the policy environment that we provide...we, rest of the stakeholders (other than telecom companies) also have equally important responsibility." A legal backing should be availble for the consumers.
