Taylor, a 4-year-old English springer spaniel, has been among the hard working rescuers during Australia's bushfire crisis. When told: "Koala, Find!", Taylor ventures out into burnt-out bushland, finding injured marsupials by sniffing out the scent of their fur or their faeces, also known as scat. Each time she finds a koala, she is rewarded with a tennis ball or culinary treat.

Helicopter-borne marksmen killed more than 5,000-camels in a five-day cull of feral herds that were threatening indigenous communities in drought-stricken areas of southern Australia, officials said. Aboriginal leaders in South Australia state said extremely large-herds of the non-native camels had been driven towards rural-communities by drought and extreme heat, threatening scarce food and drinking water, damaging infrastructure, and creating a dangerous hazard for drivers.

Choking smoke from raging bushfires blocked Bec Winter's path to safety but she put faith in her horse Charmer to find a way, eventually reaching refuge in a-local-pub in the coastal-town of Moruya, Winter said. Winter, her son Riley, and a cousin had been monitoring the bushfires near the town about 250-km south of Sydney when they decided to evacuate on New Year's Eve.
