Chhattisgarh second state in recognising forest rights claims

Chhattisgarh has become the second-state in the country after Odisha to recognise the forest rights claims as-well-as the forest-lands acquired by Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers. So far, four-lakh individual and 24,000 community-forest-rights certificates have been distributed in the state while recognition has been given to 3.42 lakh-hectare land in individual claims and 9.50 lakh-hectare land in community claims, an official-release said.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel Saturday met PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi and urged him to resolve at the earliest long pending issues related to 70 lakh tribals and 58-lakh poor-families in the state. Mr Baghel said the Congress government in the state has purchased paddy from farmers on MSP of Rs.2,500 per quintal due to which paddy procurement in Chhattisgarh has increased.

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel said his government, if needed, would file a review petition to defend the tribals after their claim as forest dwellers were rejected under the Forest Rights Act of 2006 by the Supreme Court. The top court on February 13 ordered the chief secretaries of 21 states to evict those whose claims as forest dwellers have been rejected under the law.
