Pentagon Ends Boeing's "Kill Vehicle" Contract, Cites Technical Problems

The US Defense Department said on Wednesday it is cancelling a Boeing Co contract for a "kill vehicle" due to technical design problems after spending $1.2 billion on the project. Boeing said it accepts the "decision to terminate work" on the vehicle and supports the competition for a new system, it said in a statement. "Ending the programme was the responsible thing to do."

US aerospace major Boeing on Saturday handed over the first four of the 22 Apache-attack helicopters to the IAF while another batch of four choppers will be delivered next-week. The delivery of the first-batch of the AH-64E Apache helicopters to the IAF at the Hindon air base in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad came nearly four-years after a multi-billion dollar deal for the choppers was sealed.

Boeing says it will withdraw from a massive Pentagon program to replace America's ground-based nuclear missiles, citing concerns with how the Pentagon has handled the procurement. The move makes Northrop Grumman the sole bidder for the program. Unless the Pentagon changes course, Northrop will be locked into a military program that should be worth tens of billions of dollars over several decades.
