Top Court Refuses To Stay Citizenship Act, Centre Has 4 Weeks To Respond

The Supreme Court today refused to put on hold the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which is at the core of nationwide protests and gave the centre four weeks to respond to petitions on the law. The court also said a five-judge constitution bench will give an interim order on some 140 petitions on the citizenship law.

Dozens who are participating at an indefinite sit-in against the CAA at Lucknow's iconic clock tower, which started on Friday night, have been identified and accused of "rioting" and "unlawful assembly" in three criminal cases filed by the Lucknow Police. Among those named by the cops are mostly women, including daughters of renowned Urdu poet Munawwar Rana Sumaiya Rana and Fauzia Rana.
Anti-CAA stir continues in Assam, protests organised in various parts of state

Protests against CCA continued as various organisations, civil society groups, and cultural activists persisted with their agitation across Assam. The AASU, an influenced students body in Assam, organised a massive protest rally at Nagaon town in the state. More than 20,000 people had gathered in the protest rally held at Nehrubali field in Nagaon town and demanded the rollback of the contentious Act.
