As monsoon gathers momentum, farmers advised to sow crops

The progress of the monsoon is likely to slow down later this week before it picks up again around July 1, private forecaster Skymet Weather said on Monday, a day after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) made a similar forecast. The monsoon has progressed in the past three to four days, and a good rainfall is expected in the next 48 hours.

Kumaon villagers buy Chinese foodgrain, govt-rations in short supply

Short supply of government rations has forced tribals in some border villages of Uttarakhand's Kumaon region to depend on Chinese foodgrain bought from Nepalese markets. "The quota of rations supplied by the state government falls short of our requirements so much that some of the villagers have had to depend on Chinese foodgrain bought from markets in Nepal," tribal leader Krishna Garbiyal said Friday.

Gujarat: Agriculture department staff seek security

Several Gujarat govt officials are reeling under the pressure of the farmers and have begun seeking police cover. The irrigation department has already sought the police support while inspecting. Additional Chief-Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Sanjay-Prasad, wrote a letter to Director-General Of Police of state on Oct-1 requesting him to allocate police personnel at the spot of the calculation of claims to avoid confrontation.
