Kumaon villagers buy Chinese foodgrain, govt-rations in short supply

Short supply of government rations has forced tribals in some border villages of Uttarakhand's Kumaon region to depend on Chinese foodgrain bought from Nepalese markets. "The quota of rations supplied by the state government falls short of our requirements so much that some of the villagers have had to depend on Chinese foodgrain bought from markets in Nepal," tribal leader Krishna Garbiyal said Friday.

Gujarat: Agriculture department staff seek security

Several Gujarat govt officials are reeling under the pressure of the farmers and have begun seeking police cover. The irrigation department has already sought the police support while inspecting. Additional Chief-Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Sanjay-Prasad, wrote a letter to Director-General Of Police of state on Oct-1 requesting him to allocate police personnel at the spot of the calculation of claims to avoid confrontation.

K’taka asks Centre to buy up to 1 lakh tonnes green gram at MSP

Karnataka cooperation minister Bandeppa Kashempur today called on Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh and requested him to raise the procurement limit for green gram up to 1,00,000 tonnes from the existing 23,250 tonnes under the price support scheme (PSS). The Centre implements the PSS to protect the farmers when prices fall below the minimum support price (MSP).
