With a week left, monsoon deficit at 9%

With just a week left for the season to officially end, the country is staring at a below average monsoon, even as Cyclone Daye has spurred a late surge in rains. As of Sunday, the country as a whole had received 777.4 mm rainfall, a deficit of 9%. If countrywide rainfall is 90-96% of the long-period average, it is considered as below normal.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that a low pressure formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression on Thursday and is likely to transform into a cyclonic storm in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in the next few hours, IMD cyclone warning centre officer, Sastri said.
Normal life hit in Rajasthan as cyclonic activity spurs heavy rainfall

Cyclonic development on Rajasthan and Gujarat spurred heavy rainfall in several parts of the state disrupting the normal life in various areas. The Kotari region of Bhilwara has recorded more than 150 mm of rainfall over the past two days, while districts of Bharatpur, Chittorgarh and Jhawlawar have recorded above 110 mm of rain during the period.
