Ganga River water unfit for direct drinking, bathing: CPCB

The Ganga River water is absolutely unfit for "direct drinking" and only seven-spots from where it passes can be consumed after disinfection, CPCB has said. According to the latest data with the CPCB, most of the Ganga River water in the Uttar Pradesh-West Bengal stretch is unfit for drinking and bathing. A map released by CPCB shows high-level of coliform bacteria in the river.
Extraction of groundwater illegally amounts to theft: HC

Observing that water and other natural resources are national assets and state the custodian, the Madras High Court Wednesday made it clear that those extracting groundwater illegally are punishable under the Indian Penal Code sections that attract theft. Justice S M Subramaniam disposed of a batch of about 75 petitions from people involved in the business of running packaged drinking water units.
IIT Kharagpur develops community-supported supply of purified drinking

IIT Kharagpur has developed a community supported supply of purified drinking water project at Porapara in West Midnapore district of West Bengal. Dr. Somnath Ghosal of Rural Development Center of the premier institute has installed a fully-automated multi-filtered UV treated drinking water facility which can provide close to 1000 liters of purified drinking water to 60 families every day at Re. 1/family.
