Maharashtra's dams running dry, set to aggravate drought scenario

The drought situation in Maharashtra has been further aggravated with no water in atleast 20 major-dams in the state, latest-statistics released by the state government's water resources department reveals. Even as the arrival of the monsoon is atleast one-and-a-half month away, 20 major-dams in the state such as Jayakwadi in Aurangabad district, Manjra in Beed district and Bhima-Ujani in Solapur district have gone dry.

Uddhav Thackeray on tour of drought-hit Marathwada

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray began his tour of the drought-affected Marathwada region in Maharashtra. During his visit to Beed district in the region, Thackeray will hand over 100 cattle fodder-laden trucks and other essential supplies to farmers, a Sena leader said. After the distribution of fodder and other essential supplies, the Sena chief will undertake a tour of the drought-hit region, he said.

Conversion of farmland sowing seeds of resentment in Karnataka

Since 2000, Karnataka has put nearly 200,000 hectares of farmland to non-agricultural use, including for industrial, residential and infrastructure projects. Besides shrinking farmlands, the number of dependents on existing land holdings have also increased considering little employment opportunities elsewhere. Land is often acquired for developmental projects across the country, but experts say the conversion of productive land parcels is a bigger cause for concern.
