Draft norms ask e-commerce firms to maintain level playing field

The consumer affairs ministry has issued draft e-commerce guidelines for consumer protection 2019 that calls for e-commerce entities to maintain a level-playing field and prohibit influencing the price of goods and services directly or indirectly. The draft norms mention that an e-commerce company doing business in the country shall be a registered legal entity under the laws of India.

E-commerce rules that went into effect in India caused widespread disruption for Amazon.com, forcing it to take down an array of items from its India website including Echo speakers, batteries and floor cleaners. Two sources with direct knowledge of matter said products began to disappear from the Amazon India site late on Thursday as it began complying with revised norms before a midnight deadline.

E-commerce firms like Flipkart and Amazon, which earlier saw around 68% of their GMV via sales of mobile-phones and electronics, are now witnessing growth in sales of large-appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners, etc. According to GMV data sourced from market research firm RedSeer Consulting, GMV from sale of large-appliances grew 100% to '9,100 crore in 2018, compared with `'4,550 crore in previous-year.
