
Only 5 Super-Rich Candidates Win Lok Sabha Polls, Richest Loses Deposit

It was a mixed outing for super rich candidates as five of them emerged victorious and an equal number suffered defeat in the Lok Sabha polls. However, the country's richest candidate Ramesh Kumar Sharma, who fought independently from Bihar, lost his deposit, according to Election Commission data. Ramesh Sharma had declared a net asset of Rs. 1,107 crore in his nomination papers.

The BJP on Tuesday urged the Election Commission to bar West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from campaigning in the state and alleged that "constitutional machinery" has collapsed there. Mr Naqvi accused Ms Banerjee of "complicity" in violence allegedly aimed at the BJP, claiming that she has been "provoking" her Trinamool Congress workers to attack the party's functionaries.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Bharati Ghosh was attacked in West Bengal and a poll officer was allegedly beaten up by an MLA of the party in Uttar Pradesh during the Lok Sabha poll's sixth and penultimate phase on Sunday in which over 63 percent turnout was recorded in 59 seats across six states and the national capital.
