BJP Earned More Than Twice Its 5 Top Rivals Put Together In 2019: Report

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP more than doubled its income to nearly 24.10 billion rupees in the financial year ended March 2019 ahead of elections, which is more than twice that of its five major rivals put together. About two-thirds of the Bharatiya Janata Party's income, or 14.50 billion rupees ($204 million), came from opaque financing instruments called electoral bonds.

Terming electoral bonds a legitimate and transparent method of political funding, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said it masks the link between the party and the donor in the same way the electoral trusts brought by the UPA did. NGOs have tendency to either exaggerate or misrepresent and were spreading misinformation about the bonds, he said in a Facebook post.

Electoral Bonds Worth Rs 1,716 Crore Sold In 2019, Up By 62 Per Cent: RTI

The sale of electoral bonds has skyrocketed ahead of Lok Sabha election by 62 per cent as compared to last year with the SBI selling bonds of over Rs.1700-crore, an RTI reply shows. In an RTI response to Pune-based Vihar Durve, the SBI has said that in 2018 it had sold bonds worth Rs.1056.73-crore in the months of March, April, May, July, October, November.
