With Vande Bharat Express, Railways makes a green push

India's first semihigh speed express train, Vande Bharat Express, is also first 'green train' of the Indian Railways, two officials familiar with the matter said. According to a senior officer, railways have adopted various environment-friendly measures that would help reduce its use of harmful chemicals. First among them, an officer said, was ensuring use of waterbased organic solvents, instead of chemicals, for cleaning purposes.

Supreme Court revokes NGT order to reopen Vedanta smelter

The Supreme Court on Monday set aside an order by an environmental court which had cleared the way for reopening Vedanta's south Indian copper smelter, in a blow to the company's plans to begin operations. The government of Tamil Nadu ordered the smelter shut permanently in May after violent protests at the plant in the city of Thoothukudi in which 13 people were killed.

IBM develops new technology to help prevent power outages

IBM Corp. has developed technology to predict and monitor when and where trees and vegetation threaten power lines which could help improve power supply operations and reduce outages, it said on Wednesday. Vegetation can cause disruption for energy companies, often growing over or obstructing power transmission lines. Energy suppliers usually deal with this by conducting regular inspections and trimming.
