'Fuel, time worth Rs 12,000 crore wasted at toll plazas per year'

The average waiting time at 488 toll plazas across India is 9 minutes, according to a study that pegs the total annual loss due to this at Rs 12,000 crore. While 35% of the loss is due to fuel waste, 55% is because of the loss of man-hours and 10% on account of carbon emission.

India's fuel demand fell to its lowest in more than two years in September, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) showed. Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, totaled 16.01 million tonnes - its lowest since July 2017 - down about 0.3% compared with the same month last year.

Fuel demand fell 1.8 percent in November compared with the same month last year. Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, totalled 17.27 million tonnes, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry showed. Sales of gasoline, or petrol, were 8.7 percent higher from a year earlier at 2.32 million tonnes.
