Former defence minister George Fernandes first-shot into national prominence when he defeated Congress stalwart S K Patil in 1967-parliamentary-elections. He also had a strong Mumbai connection. Recalling the veteran socialist's association with the city, CPI leader Prakash Reddy told George Fernandes had in 1967 emerged as "giant-killer" by defeating Patil, who was then called "uncrowned king of Bombay" and represented Bombay South LS seat.

PM Modi condoled demise of former union minister and socialist-leader George Fernandes, saying he was frank and fearless and never-deviated from his ideology. In a series-of-tweets, he said, "George Sahab" represented best of India's political-leadership. "Frank and fearless, forthright and farsighted, he made a valuable contribution to our country. He was among the most effective voices for the rights of the poor," he said.
