GPS may soon get centimetre-level precision on smartphones

Researchers have found a way to achieve centimetre (cm)-level precision on a smartphone's Global Positioning System (GPS). To achieve the same, the researchers combined the signals from four different Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs). The approach uses only one rather than the traditional two frequencies and collects data from more satellites for precision and accuracy.

India will soon have its own satellite navigation system on the lines of GPS by the US, GLONASS by Russia, European Unions Galileo and Chinas BNS, with the Ministry of Electronics and IT in the process of coming out with a tender to invite companies. NavIC, or navigation with Indian constellation, developed by ISRO, allows navigation in the Indian Ocean region.
